The best place to start for the main continuity is from the very beginning The original series (sometimes called gundam 0079 or first gundam) is the entrypoint for the universal century (uc) timeline It's currently streaming on crunchyroll It does get a little bit trickier, because there are alternate universe timelines unrelated to the original, like iron blooded orphans or gundam seed. This is a simple but detailed written guide to the world of gundam, below you'll find a guide of the series explaining the timelines and a summary of each series and the timeline it correlates to First off you're probably wondering what *is* gundam exactly
I would argue that there is no anime franchise that is more iconic and influential than that of mobile suit gundam It is the face of mecha anime and the name most people think of when the genre is brought up It is also infamously long and notoriously hard to get into (good luck getting your friends to watch low quality animation by late 70s standards if they won't even watch high quality. G gundam is a fight anime, gundam wing and 00 gundam are super sentai teams, witch from mercury starts off as a high school bout anime, iron blood orphans is a yakuza story, etc Seed is a reinterpretation of the story of mobile suit gundam that starts off the universal century and in that regard is more homage than anything else. It's also, i think, one of the most thematically concise gundam series, with so much emotional payoff.
I'm liking it so far, hard to describe the appeal without spoilers, just make sure you watch the prologue Iron blooded orphans is probably the most popular for new comers. Man, seeing this just reminds me how much i want a new gundam series that isn't yet another iteration of build fighters I mean, i really enjoyed the first season of build fighters, but everything past that was extraneous. Victory gets mixed reception even amongst uc fans Gundam x is looked upon fondly in hindsight, but again doesn't have a major fandom.
Mobile suit gundam 0079 (you can choose between the film trilogy for a more condensed version or the tv series which is longer alternatively you can also read the manga the origin which retells the entirety of the original story do not watch the ova though if you haven't seen the original show or read the manga/i can't say much about the film.
