Gl8 is the highest you can go as an officer, that is competitive All that said, if you are well liked, you can promote quickly into one of many ancillary or management roles You actually make more with bop then with nys corrections Nys starts at $36,420 while bop starts at $43,545 at a gl5 level in that area Even when you add the locality pay for nassau, suffolk, rockland or westchester counties at $3,210 for nys, you still end up with more at bop. Bop has the largest number of non supervisory positions in any fed le agency
The issue with bop is thwre are 122 institutions and 180 different ways and thats not because of sexuriry level At any usp housin units have 2 staff per howevwr this wasnt standard until 2013 So you will have a paetnwr. At the bop, you are a correctional officer first, they tell you this in the academy, as all employees (hr, medical, financial services, etc.) go through the academy.
