Which party is considered to care most about a given issue (associative ownership), and which one is perceived to have the best solutions (competence ownership). How can i sustain issue ownership over time Issue ownership, in other words, seems to play an important role in determining the balance of power in contemporary democracies. Recently, the concept of issue ownership has attracted increasing attention by students of electoral behaviour as well as party competition Given the growing importance of issue competition and the growing use of social media during elections, this study seeks to create a better understanding of how issue dynamics relating to political parties play out on social media. I then develop and analyze a theoretical model that permits adjudication among these three candidate mechanisms.
This study investigates the dynamics of issue ownership among political parties, emphasizing how parties can alter public perception of their association with specific issues through media exposure. Applied to elections, issue ownership theory, both of the competence and the associative variant, states that parties see their vote share increase if the issues they own become more salient among the electorate.
