The surfaces, in terms of the original surface which the silver coin used to have prior to being gilded, are already destroyed The coin would most likely have been chemically cleaned prior to the electroplating or whatever technique was used to apply the gilding. Coin collecting (or hoarding) was more common at the time than most collectors would suspect since all we really hear about these days are the well known and wealthy collectors of the gilded age. You have a commemorative medal (not a coin) issued at the columbian exposition in 1893 The piece was issued with an integral loop struck with the medal but your example has the loop missing (as many do) You can see the remnants at 12 o'clock on both sides.
