Auli, also known as auli bugyal, in garhwali, which means meadow, is located at an elevation of 2,800 metres (9,200 ft) above sea level. Auli is believed to have gotten its name from kilmora, a kind of sorrel, a short plant commonly found here, which was said to be used for washing the utensils of the sun temple at katarmal.
