With the enactment of california megan’s law in 1996, residents gained access to valuable information to help protect themselves and their loved ones from the threat of registered sex offenders. Megan nicole kanka, who was 7 years old, was abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered in 1994, in the state of new jersey by a violent predator living across the street from her home. Megan’s law enacted on october 31, 1994, requires certain convicted sex offenders to register with law enforcement authorities and provides for varying levels of community notification based upon the degree of risk posed to the offender’s community. Sexual offenders and sexually violent predators are required to register all current and intended addresses, employment/vocation information, and student enrollment information with the pennsylvania state police.
